Description
King of the long-distance run – Emil Zátopek
(* 19. september 1922, Kopřivnice – † 21. november 2000, Praha)
Emil Zátopek was a Czech athlete and representative of Czechoslovakia, a four-time Olympic champion in long-distance running, and the husband of the Olympic winner Dana Zátopková.
Emil Zátopek was the first person to run 10 km under 29 minutes (28: 54.2 on June 1, 1954, in Brussels) and 20 km under one hour (59:51.8 on September 29, 1951, in Stará Boleslav). However, he became most famous during the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. He won the 5 km, 10 km run and even the marathon. He was actually running for the first time in his life. At the same time, he created a new Olympic record in each of these disciplines. To this day, no long-distance runner has succeeded in repeating this “triple victory”. Zátopek, known for his well-worked running style, accompanied by weird grimaces and facial expressions, was nicknamed abroad as the “Czech Locomotive”.
Let’s watch a video together and remember how at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics,
Emil Zátopek won 5 000 m, 10 000 m and MARATHON.
To this day, no long-distance runner has succeeded in repeating this “triple victory” at one olympics.
